Introduction

I am Viola Fülei, a potter living in Vác. I grew up in Kecskemét and began to work with clay at the age of 8 in the Youth Centre of Kecskemét in a summer camp led by Dorottya Gömöri. I felt it was the activity in my life that keeps me restless and enchanted ceaselessly. Thus, parallel to my studies at the Special Education College I have obtained professional qualification as a potter at the Dr. Kresz Maria Foundation; my masters were Zsuzsa Angyal Csuporné and Ágnes Rónainé. I have always felt that no matter if I fail or if I succeed, I have to go on anyway! This attitude helped me through the difficulties I have faced when learning this ancient craft. Shaping, firing and decorating earth makes our environment and routine household chores more enjoyable. My products are useful utensils bringing a bit of tradition and playfulness into our home.

I set up my own pottery studio in 2018.
Why exactly pottery products?
I have tasted many crafts at a time when I temporarily did not have access to any potteries. Constant changes in our environment offer a wide range of opportunities to create spectacular, cosy, captivating, glittering and charming objects by the simplest possible sticking and spraying movements. However, I highly appreciate tradition instead: activities with finesse that have been refined and matured in hundreds of years to produce durable and quality utensils and decorations for the weekdays of all ages.
I live in a creative family; my husband is a pianist, we are raising our four children in Vác and I have not returned to my speech therapist job yet. I used to work in kindergartens and schools in Budapest and was leading speech improvement drama pedagogy classes for aphasic patients.

Products
I use potter’s clay, a metal oxide silicate compound with blended organic components. If fired at 900-1000 ̊C it goes through sintering, an irreversible process and obtains new chemical and physical attributes. Potter’s glazes are put on the pots during a second firing. These silicate materials are heated to be as thick as honey and then cooled down to become a glassy coating making the product shiny and waterproof. My kitchenware is made without using hazardous materials during production procedures. They can be put into microwave ovens or dishwashers but do not use them in electric or gas ovens, furnaces, ovens or stoves. The porous wall structure provides excellent thermal insulation, many of its advantageous attributes are exploited in traditional Hungarian dairy production, food storage and for drinking vessels. With their durable quality and thousands years of tradition, these products radiate a certain kind of timeless permanence and peace.
